What Back To School Will Look Like

As parents, we are naturally all interested in what back to school will look like. Each one of us in living in a different area, with kids attending different schools, and there are a variety of community factors that can influence this. Here in the south, school starts early so I thought I would give a lot of you a preview of what you can expect.

My daughter goes to public school and they have started virtual learning. As much as I would like her to be able to attend school in person, I know that given the present situation, the limited resources, and large student population, that isn’t really a good idea. So I am pleased that they have a good virtual school program set up. She has met with her teachers and classmates virtually and I feel confident that she has a sense of community. I also see that they are laying out expectations and will be grading and holding students accountable so that is reassuring as well.

My son goes to private school and they will be starting a hybrid learning model very soon where half the student population attends school and the next day, the other half attends. I think given their smaller class sizes and better resources, this will be a good decision as well.

In the end, no matter the model of learning that is adopted and what back to school may look like for your family, we all have to flexible and prepared for change. Most importantly, we have to remember it is a privilege to learn. My grandmother used to walk over two miles everyday to a one room school house. I think of her and how grateful she was for her books and to have that opportunity. We all need to count our blessings in times of hardship and be thankful as the teachers and school staff do their best to adjust to these new circumstances.

In closing, I leave you with this message that my husband and I gave our own children:
“Just because it is virtual, don’t get lazy. Still go above and beyond because this is your education.”

I want to share this motivational quote about learning:
“Education is our passport to the future, for tomorrow belongs to the people who prepare for it today.” — Malcolm X
